Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
242 PM PDT Mon Jul 7 2025
.KEY MESSAGES...
* Isolated showers and thunderstorms possible today and Wednesday
afternoon from Lassen County into northern Washoe County.
* Increased afternoon breezes will induce areas of elevated to
locally critical fire weather conditions Tuesday and Wednesday.
* Seasonably hot conditions through Thursday will precede a
heatwave Friday through the weekend.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
21Z satellite imagery reveals a maturing cumulus field in Lassen
County and far northern Washoe County. This area will be the focus
for isolated showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, although odds
are only around 15%. Similar odds exist in this area Wednesday
afternoon as low pressure lifts across the region. Elsewhere, dry
weather will prevail through at least the weekend.
An uptick in afternoon west breezes is expected Tuesday and
Wednesday in response to the passing low. Winds are not expected to
be unusually strong or prolonged, but will be more typical of our
summertime zephyr. These breezy winds will overspread daytime RH
reductions below 15%, resulting in a brief period of elevated to
locally critical fire weather conditions across lower elevations
each afternoon. Wednesday will be the windier of the two days, so
there may be greater fire impacts over a longer duration compared to
Tuesday.
Broad high pressure amplifies over the region after Wednesday,
allowing for widespread warming that culminates in a late
week/weekend heatwave. Regional highs are expected to be near 90F
and 100F Friday through Sunday in Sierra and western Nevada valleys,
respectively. While this heat isn`t record-breaking, it will impact
any outdoor weekend activities as moderate to locally major HeatRisk
sets in. Be sure to plan your weekend accordingly, and practice
your heat safety precautions if you will be in the heat for extended
periods this weekend.

.AVIATION...
Widespread VFR conditions with typical afternoon winds prevail
today. There is a slight chance of showers and isolated
thunderstorms near the Oregon border this afternoon, and again
Wednesday afternoon. Increased west breezes are expected Tuesday
and Wednesday afternoons, which may pose low-end LLWS issues
across Sierra Front terminals.
